about my author visits

Deborah Kogan Ray & Friend

One of the joys of working as an author and illustrator of books for children is the opportunity I have to visit young readers.

When I visit your school, I want each child to feel special.

We are children for only a short time. I hope I will have touched and expanded the world of the person this child will grow up to be.

when I visit your school

I plan plenty of time for question and answer. I will provide booklists that are appropriate for each grade so that the students can read my books before I visit. Our session will be more lively if teachers and students discuss beforehand things they would like to ask.

Many of my books fit into curriculum requirements and class projects can be planned around them prior to my visit for added enrichment.

We can plan a one day program or residencies up to one week.

I will work with up to fifty students in a classroom setting and up to three hundred in an auditorium or gymnasium for any of my sessions with grades 1-6. When I visit your school, I will bring all the materials that go into making a picture book. I will talk about the process and the challenge of making books. I will need an easel, paper and colored ink markers, a large table, a display board and pushpins, a carousel slide projector with remote, cart, screen and clip-on microphone.

about my presentations

-

Kindergarten: "What will it look like?" (half hour)
With a little help from my friends, we create a story character that I draw.

Grades 1 - 3: "Making a picture book" (one hour)
I talk about the process of creating a book using my original manuscripts, dummies, sketches and finished illustrations.I show slides of how a book evolves, then read it. I tell funny stories and serious ones. There is always a story behind the story of any book.

Apple Picking Time

Grades 4 - 6: "Telling a story in words and pictures" (one hour)
When I talk to older readers about the creation of a picture book, I emphasize the writing aspect. I stress research, rewriting and editing to achieve good results.

Grades 1-6: "Inside my studio" (one hour)
Using slides and original material, I share my stories and the process I go through to create a book. I show how and where I work, how ideas become stories and rough sketches grow into finished art. For upper elementary and older audiences I go into detail about the process of writing, revising, submitting and working with an editor.
